After the enormous success achieved last year, the two-act ballet Zorba the Greek, with music by Mikis Theodorakis and choreography by Lorca Massine, is being re-proposed at the Teatro Romano.

On 27 and 28 August, the ballet academy of Arena, coordinated by Gaetano Petrosino in the show produced by Fondazione Arena with scenes by Filippo Tonon, costume coordination by Silvia Bonetti and lighting by Sergio Toffali, will be on stage. T

he novel, originally entitled "The Life and Time of Alexis Zorba" but simply known as "Zorba the Greek", is the best-known novel by Greek writer Nikos Kazantzakis. Published in 1946, it owes its fame to the film adaptation made twenty years later by director Michael Cacoyannis, starring American actor Anthony Quinn as Alexis Zorba and Greek actress Irene Papas as the widow.

Iconic is the scene in which the protagonist dances on the beach the sirtaki, the original composition by Mikis Theodorakis known as the Dance of Zorba, which after gaining fame in Greece it has become a popular folklore dance. The film has been nominated for numerous awards, including six Oscars (of which it won three for Best Supporting Actress, Stage Design and Photography), five Golden Globes, four Baftas, one Grammy Award and one Laurel Award.
