The Feast of the Redeemer is among the most popular celebrations for Venetians (and others), where religious and entertainment elements unite.

On the Saturday night, a pyrotechnical display of fireworks attracts thousands of spectators: light games and reflections on the unique stage of St. Mark’s Lagoon provide a kaleidoscope of eyecatching colours against the spires, domes and belltowers of the city. The event was originally launched to mark the end of the terrible plague that struck Venice between 1575 and 1577.

PROGRAMME:

- Friday 14 July: opening of the votive bridge which links the Zattere (southern dock area) with the Church of the Redeemer on the island of Giudecca

- Saturday 15 July, at 11.30pm: fireworks display in the Lagoon of St. Mark

- Sunday 16 July: the Redeemer boat races in the Giudecca Canal, followed by a votive mass in the Church of the Redeemer.
