Just a few minutes away by vaporetto is San Giorgio Maggiore island where you find yourself thrown into a more intimate world, far from the crowds of the more frequented tourist areas in Venice. An equally fascinating world where you can spend the day among masterpieces, history and nature.
The tour starts from Piazza San Marco where we board a vaporetto that in just five minutes docks in front of the imposing Basilica, a religious building designed in 1565 by Andrea Palladio that houses art treasures including paintings by Jacopo Tintoretto, Palma il Giovane and Vittore Carpaccio. One of the most exciting experiences is climbing the bell tower to enjoy one of the most beautiful views in the world: the Venetian lagoon at a height of 75 meters!
The tour continues with a visit to the Giorgio Cini Foundation where an audio-guide accompanies visitors as they admire the Staircase and Library of Longhena, the Palladio Cloister, the Buora Cloister, the Last Supper with the reproduction of the Marriage at Cana and the photograph room.
Music by Antonio Fresa, performed by the Orchestra of La Fenice Theatre is the soundtrack of the tour of the labyrinth dedicated to the Argentine writer Jorge Luis Borges. Over 3,200 boxwood shrubs create a maze that takes visitors on a romantic journey that evokes the passing of time and the seasons of life.
The tour ends with a visit to the Vatican Chapels and the San Giorgio Maggiore “forest”. The audio guide again accompanies visitors along this walk through art, spirituality and nature to discover the eleven “churches” built for the 2018 Architecture Biennial, and which are today an integral part of the Cini Foundation complex.
To reach San Giorgio from Piazzale Roma or San Zaccaria landing in Piazza San Marco, take Vaporetto line 2.
