From February 14th, a great exhibition tells the story of the two Mexican artists who have become legendary: Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera. It’s a collective exhibition held at the Altinate Cultural Centre - San Gaetano.

The core body of the works comes from the famous American collection of Jacques and Natasha Gelman: the two spouses had an intense relationship with the two Mexican artists, who also painted their portraits. Their collection brought together several key works by Frida, including her most famous self-portraits, and by Diego.

Alongside the great paintings, there is also a photograph of Frida's father, Karl Wilhem Kahlo, a German Jew immigrant who was a skilled architectural photographer. As a very young girl, Frida accompanied him in his journeys around Mexico and this collaboration greatly influenced her art. A colourful section is dedicated to Mexican costumes, whose colours are reflected in the works of both spouses.

It is the iconic, strong, vital Mexico that emerges in this exhibition, the land and people which in the mid-20th century attracted intellectuals, artists, militants and adventurers from the Old Continent. And no one has been able to translate that world of passion, beauty, strength and suffering into art quite like Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera.
