The fortresses of the Great War


Fortifications, trenches, observation stations, war cemeteries, shrines and monuments to the fallen: in our mountains there are places with memorials to the men who fought during the First World War. Visiting them is a way to remember the events of a not too distant past and better understand the reasons and meaning of memory.



Fort Verena - Roana

At altitude of 2,015 meters, with 360-degree views, the Austro-Hungarians considered this forte to be the “dominator of the Plateau”. At dawn on 24 May 1915, the cannon shot that started the First World War was fired from Fort Verena.

Fort Lisser – Enego

Fort Lisser was built between 1911 and 1914 and was known by war correspondents as the “Lion of the Plateau”. Together with Fort Cima Campo and Fort Cima Lan, it was one of the “Forts of Brenta" that protected Valsugana

Fort Mount Interrotto – Asiago

Built in the late 1800s on Mount Interrotto at an altitude of 1,392 meters, the Fort with its mighty walls looked more like a castle. This Fort was used as defence barracks and to control movements along the border; the Fort was restored and is now used for many different events.

Asiago-Leiten Military Shrine

On the peak of Leiten hill the imposing Shrine towers above the city of Asiago. Nearly 60,000 soldiers rest in the Shrine; the museum at the entrance of the Crypt-Ossuary houses many relics collected from the battlefields, including documents and photographs of the era

Open-air museum of the Great War – Cortina d'Ampezzo

This is the largest open-air museum of the First World War in Belluno. Visitors may reach the museum on foot or by mountain bike; there are many tunnels, trenches and military posts to explore in order to learn more about what really happened in the dramatic war fought at high altitudes

Cima Grappa

23,000 soldiers, including Italians and Austro-Hungarians, rest in the linear and imposing Military Shrine of Cima Grappa on Mount Grappa at an altitude of 1,776 meters; this is the military shrine that receives the highest number of visitors. Below Cima Grappa there is also a section of the "Vittorio Emanuele III" tunnel, the largest high altitude fort of the First World War

The Forts of Lessinia

The Lessinia area was considered to be of paramount strategic importance and had five forts of the defence system: Masua, Mount Tesoro, Santa Viola, Castelletto and San Briccio. These forts created a defence arch of more than 30 kilometers north of Verona
