The plot of Il Trovatore won the public's immediate approval; it is rather intricate and novel-like and takes place in the Biscay and Aragon regions of Spain, at the beginning of the 15th century.
Expressive singing tells a story of passion, love, jealousy and revenge featuring the main characters of Manrico and the Count of Luna, who don’t know they are brothers and are in love with the same woman, named Leonora. The final epilogue is a classic of opera dramas.
The libretto is made up of four parts and eight scenes and was taken by Salvadore Cammarano from Antonio García Gutiérrez’s drama El Trovador.
«With no other of his works, not even Nabucco, did Verdi touch his audience's heart so quickly» (Julian Budden).
