During the Scaliger period, Verona was at its most powerful and reached its maximum territorial expansion. Extraordinary works like the walls that run through the hills and the many castles and palaces throughout the province are the evidence of the 120 years, from 1262 to 1387, when the Della Scala family ruled a vast area between the Po and Adige rivers.

The heart of this itinerary is of course Verona, the city of Romeo and Juliet, with its many  monuments, like the Scaliger Palace, the Arche, and Castelvecchio, which houses the Museum of Ancient and Modern Art.

Moving closer to Lake Garda, the next leg of the tour is Villafranca di Verona, with its Castle built between 1185 and 1202, then Valeggio sul Mincio, to visit the ancient Fortress with the Round Tower, and Borghetto, an enchanting and ancient village of mills.

Another popular place is Lazise, a historical Scaliger and Venetian navy base. The Fortress is surrounded by the turreted walls that enclose the old city. The Scaliger Castle of Torri del Benaco  dates back to the fourteenth century and nowadays is home to an interesting ethnographic museum.

The tour ends in romantic Malcesine, with its beautiful Castle built on a cliff over the lake, where you can visit the Garda Museum of Natural History.
