In the calendar of the 2022 opera season, Orlando Furioso, one of Antonio Vivaldi's most important productions, returns to the Verona scene.
The first performance of this work dates back to 1978 and was a real triumph, so much so that by popular demand it was repeated the following season. This success must be considered even more striking if one takes into account that the Baroque and eighteenth-century works have been infrequent in the history of the Philharmonic Theater.
This year, after an absence of 43 years, Vivaldi's work returns to the fore and is rediscovered through a new and elegant staging directed by the young Fabio Ceresa, the sets by Massimo Checchetto and the costumes by Giuseppe Palella.
The whole action takes place on the enchanted island of the evil Alcina: Orlando cannot find his beloved Angelica, who instead mourns the disappearance of Medoro; he is saved from the shipwreck by Alcina, who becomes Angelica's accomplice, introducing Medoro as brother of the queen of Cathay to the jealous Orlando. The work is offered on 4 dates starting from Sunday 8 May.
