The calendar of the 2022 opera season brings Amilcare Ponchielli's masterpiece back to the Verona scene: La Gioconda. It was with this opera that the then unknown debut soprano Maria Callas began her triumphal career, performing on the stage of the Verona Arena in 1947. Ponchielli's intense melodrama, written on lines by Arrigo Boito, is now hosted from the wings of the Philharmonic Theater.
The new staging was co-produced by the Arena Foundation in collaboration with OperaLombardia and the Slovenian Theater of Maribor. Filippo Tonon is in charge of the direction, sets and costumes created together with Carla Galleri. The Choir Master is Ulisse Trabacchin while the orchestra, choir and technicians are those of the Arena di Verona Foundation.
The action takes place in 17th century Venice. According to the plot of the opera, Gioconda, at the center of a story that unravels between the betrayals and the amorous intrigues of the protagonists, renounces her love for Enzo for the benefit of Laura, who saved her mother's life, and prefers to kill herself even though to indulge in wicked Barnabas.
The work is offered on 4 dates starting from Sunday 23rd October.
