Recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site for its uniqueness due to the genius of the architect Palladio, containing 23 monuments in the historical centre and 16 villas in the province, Vicenza was had walls on the western side since the Roman times. The Basilica Palladio, the Teatro Olimpico, the Loggia del Capitaniato Palazzo Chiericati, location of the Civic Museum, Villa la Rotonda and Palazzo Valmarano are just some of the universal treasures that welcome visitors to this area. 

The most spectacular walled city of the province is Marostica. The upper castle on the Pausolino hill, the lower castle and the connecting city walls built by the dynasty of the Scala family in the fourteenth century are all to be admired. In September of even years the famous chess game is played in the Piazza with more than three hundred people in costume.

This is followed with Bassano del Grappa. The Ponte degli Alpini, by the architect Palladio, is the symbol of this city that combines medieval heritage with architecture of the Venetian era. The Castello degli Ezzelini, the Church of San Francesco and the splendid museums, the Civic and the museum at Palazzo Sturm, the Ceramics Museum and the Museo Remondini are all worth a visit.
Another two walled cities of the province are Lonigo - with the sixteenth century Palazzo Pisani, the Towers of Castello Scaligero and Villa Giovannelli - and Arzignano.
