If you are in the area, do not miss a visit to the Parco Giardino Sigurtà, a large nature park located in Valeggio sul Mincio, a few kilometres from Lake Garda.

Between the hills and lake Garda are 14 Walled Cities.

First and foremost is Verona with its Arena, one of the most significant monuments of ancient Rome, the piazza Brà, the Shakespearian Romeo and Juliet sites, the Cathedral, the Basilica di S.Zeno and the Piazza delle Erbe.

Around thirty kilometres away is Soave, known for the white wine that it produces. Dominated by the spectacular castle and surrounded by embattled walls, the city is focused around a central square which is overlooked by Palazzo Cavalli, Palazzo della Pretura and the fifteenth century Church of S. Maria di Montesanto.

The journey continues along Lake Garda to reach Malcesine with its castle that was rebuilt by the Scala family in the thirteenth century, the sixteenth century Palazzo dei Capitani, the Church of San Rocco and the Parish Church of Santo Stefano (ninth century). The next stop is Torri del Benaco with the Scala family castle and the three embattled towers. Even the Bardolino castle from the ninth century was rebuilt and expanded in the Scala family era, while the square boundary wall was opened towards the lake.

We continue to Lazise, an ancient customs centre, Peschiera del Garda, a strategic military centre during the middle ages and Valeggio sul Mincio with its castle, the Round Tower and the neighbouring fortress of Borghetto. Other walled cities in the Verona area are Villafranca di Verona, Castelnuovo del Garda, Pastrengo, Cologna Veneta, Rivoli and Legnago.

After Rome, Verona is considered the second most important city in Italy due to the presence of the best preserved Roman remains.
