The Torcolato and Breganze Wine Road
Route details Departure pointThiene Arrival pointBassano

From the gentle volcanic and tuffaceous foothills to the stretches of pebbles and gravel along the banks of the Astico and Brenta Rivers, this Wine Road begins in Thiene with its lovely late-gothic Villa Da Porto Colleoni. After travelling a few kilometres across the green hills with their vineyards we reach Breganze, in the heart of the DOC Breganze area, an unusual area with noble villas and small medieval buildings, where the so-called 'columbarium' testify the noble past of the town.

This unique landscape leads to Mason Vicentino, which is beautiful in spring when the cherry trees are in blossom and their delicate white flowers give a magic atmosphere to the Vicenza foothills. Marostica is likewise quite unique, with its two Scaligeri castles and the large beautiful marble chess board in Piazza Castello, where every two years a live chess game revives the love contest between lords Rinaldo and Vieri, who were both in love with the beautiful Lionora.

Finally the road leads to Bassano del Grappa, one of the loveliest towns in the province. Its main monument is the Alpines' Bridge, built to a project by Palladio, while in the medieval centre there are several holy and civil buildings which clearly demonstrate the Venetian influence.

The pride of the area are the Protected Geographical Indication cherries. It was the first cherry in Italy to have obtained the European PGI Recognition Mark which identifies the peculiar characteristics of a product whose production takes place exclusively in a specific geographical area.  It is heart-shaped, with a colour ranging from pink to dark red, depending on the variety; it is juicy, with a full, sweet and very pleasant taste.

The beautiful walled city of Marostica is known throughout the world for the famous "Chess Game" with characters in medieval clothes, in September of even years. Furthermore, the characteristic city wall starts from the Colle Pausolino above and goes down to the historical town centre, connecting the Upper Castle to the Lower one. The walking trail is the scenic path that follows the walls, giving visitors an evocative panorama.
