Useful advice Travelling on foot

At the foot of the Marmolada mountain, in the small hamlet of Santa Maria delle Grazie in the Rocca Pietore area, there is a Marian shrine originally dating back to 1693 which is run today by the Friars Minor. The current building was erected since 1947 and was officially consecrated in 1965. The shrine has reached such a level of fame over the years that today it can be considered as the most popular destination for Marian devotion in the Dolomite valleys. The religious building shows valuable ornamentation and finishing works and the interior is enhanced by the presence of numerous works of art by famous contemporary artists such as Augusto Murer and Toni Benetton.

Next to the shrine there is the old small church of Calloneghe, which was built after an offering to the Madonna of Graces (Madonna delle Grazie) had been made. It was exactly for the purpose of welcoming the growing numbers of followers of this religious site that the construction of a new sacred place was decided, as the small church was rather small and dilapidated. Therefore the current Shrine was built, to which the venerated image of the Santa Maria delle Grazie was transported.

Do not miss a visit to the Chapel of the Madonna delle Dolomiti. Dug into the rocks of Punta Rocca on the Marmolada, it was even visited by Pope John Paul II during his stay in Agordino in 1979.
