To be travelled by bicycle

To complete the circumnavigation of an island at the mouth of a great river is a great opportunity to enjoy a 360-degree view of the surrounding environment. The route that starts and finishes in Porto Tolle and runs along the top of the embankment of Polesine Camerini island, is a wonderful trail that allows the visitor to enjoy the views of the Po Delta from a privileged standpoint, even better if done on a bicycle.

Just beyond Porto Tolle the road leads to Ca 'Dolfin. The view extends on the one side to the regular succession of the fields and on the other to the Venetian Po, to then, a few kilometres further on, centre on the Volta Vaccari bight and the lagoon undertows of Busa del Canarin and Busa Bastimento, where lies wildlife unique to the world.

Further south, the route meets the villages of Scardovari and Bonelli, small fishing villages characterized by colourful houses and chequered chimneys, which underpin the flat and orderly countryside. Upon arrival at the southern end of the island, Barricata, you can relax on the beautiful beach. Just beyond is Sacca di Scardovari, where prized DOP (Protected Designation of Origin) mussels are farmed.

Thanks to its extraordinary quality, the Scardovari Mussel is the first Italian mollusc to have been awarded, in 2013, European status of Protected Designation of Origin. It is certainly not by chance, given that its particular distinguishing features are due precisely to the characteristics of the environment of the Po Delta, the largest wetland in Italy
