Useful advice: Rediscover the Vicenza area and relive the enchantment described by a famous writer

Antonio Fogazzaro has invested all his novels with his love for the area around Vicenza, especially in his greatest literary works “Small Antique World" (1896) and "Small Modern World" (1901).

Married to Margherita Valmarana, he lived at the Villa Valmarana ai Nani, in the southern outskirts of Vicenza, the departure point of our itinerary. From here you can get to the historic city centre of Vicenza, between the Basilica Palladiana and Corso Fogazzaro, where Antonio was born in 1842 at number 111.

Leaving the city you move southward, up to the Villa Fogazzaro Colbacchini in Montegalda, a place described in “Small Modern World” and much loved by the writer for the scenery of rustic beauty.

Heading toward the Vicenza mountains, you cannot miss a visit to Tonezza del Cimone and Villa Valmarana of Velo d’Astico with landscapes described numerous times by the writer.

Another residence, the sumptuous Villa Caldogno designed by Palladio, represents the soul of a town, Caldogno, that Fogazzaro will always have at heart and where he was town councillor from 1885 to 1911, the year of his death. Passing by Bassano del Grappa you return to Vicenza, in Piazza San Lorenzo. Here, at the foot of the monument to the poet Zanella, spiritual guide of Fogazzaro, the path ends in the places dear to the Vicenza writer who was a candidate for the Nobel Prize for literature several times.

Itinerary that tells the story of the places between the foothills and the first plain of Vicenza, set forever in the words of novels.
