This geographical area has always been an important area for breeding and selling animals of the equine species; the first important date in its history was 1772, when Bibbiena designed and followed the construction of the first fairgrounds for horses, mules and donkeys.

For more than 100 years, horse races were held here together with a market for the best horses, until the turning point in 1898. This was the year was the start of the modern history of the Scala show: the first edition of the Horse and  Agricultural Show.

From a simple horse market, the fair developed rapidly to officially become an International Show in 1950 and a leading event on the world equestrian panorama.

The Show’s ability to keep its noble and ancient equestrian traditions alive proved to be of fundamental importance, above all as from the post-war period, when economic and agricultural growth in part marginalised horses from peoples’ lives.

Fieracavalli not only “catalyses the interest” of horse lovers, but also that of thousands of people, most of whom are young, who through horses see themselves in a new way of life, linking sport, music, design, art, solidarity, history, leisure, tourism and adventure.
