On 16th and 17th June, the 100th edition of the Arena di Verona Opera Festival will be inaugurated with the new production of Aida, curated in the direction, scenes and costumes by multifaceted artist Stefano Poda in his debut at the Arena.

The inauguration, over the two evenings, brings with it the welcome participation of guests such as the golden couple of opera, the Divine Anna Netrebko and Yusif Eyvazof, and the global live broadcast of the first evening by national public broadcaster RAI.

Aida, the “queen” of operas at the Arena di Verona, will be staged with 14 performances until 8 September.

Composed in 1869 to mark the inauguration of the Suez Canal, ‘Aida’ by Giuseppe Verdi narrates the love affairs of the young Aida, daughter of the king of Ethiopia but delivered as a slave to Amneris, daughter of the Pharaoh of Egypt. In love (mutually) with the valiant Radamès who is betrothed to Amneris, Aida will follow him until their tragic death, showing him love and fidelity. The first performance of Aida, staged by the tenor Giovanni Zenatello, was a success with the cosmopolitan audience in the amphitheatre experiencing an evening of unique emotions.
